BPI-series EnhancementsSince its introduction in 1994, the LCD Serial Backpack® (BPK-000) has been available separately or factory installed to 2x16 LCDs (BPK-216). The tremendous popularity of LCDs with the preinstalled Backpack led to the introduction in May 1999 of a version tailored specifically for 2x16 LCDs. The new series, BPI-216, is totally software compatible with existing BPK-216 applications. This page summarizes the changes. Circuit Board LayoutThe interface board for BPI-216 modules has been designed specifically to fit a 2x16 LCD, so it is smaller than the general-purpose Backpack board, as shown below.
The new layout relocates the configuration switches, contrast control, and input header. Configuration/Backlight SwitchesStandard Backpacks have a LINES configuration switch to let you to select between one-line and multi-line LCDs. On the BPI-216, the controller is internally set for a 2-line LCD. The configuration switch is now used to control the LCD's backlight (BPI-216L models only). Backlight current is set to approximately 40mA via an on-board 27-ohm resistor. Solder pads on the BPI-216 circuit board allow you to bypass the switch, if desired, and control the backlight externally. Current DrawOriginal BPK- series modules draw less than 3mA (excluding backlight). BPI- series modules can be expected to draw slightly less current due to elimination of one configuration switch (LINES), and rerouting of the BPS switch. AvailabilityThe general-purpose LCD Serial Backpack ® interface board continues to be sold separately as part number BPK-000. Orders for Backpacks with 2x16 LCDs will be filled with the new BPI-216 models. The BPI-series interface board will not be available separately. Although the transition to the new BPI-series began in May 1999, our distributors may continue to deliver BPK-series modules for some time as they use up stock on hand. |
