BPP-420L Version 5 Upgrade Guide
BPP-420L underwent a minor hardware update in Spring 2012. This document lists differences between the version 4 (v4) product, sold from 1999—2012, and the v5 model.
Summary of Changes
Hardware
Changes only affect the layout of the serial interface board; the 4x20 LCD is the same model that has been in use for 10+ years. The biggest change is the elimination of pads to support a 4x40 LCD (the BPP-440L). That model will get its own display-specific interface. Here is a direct comparison of the v4 and v5 versions of the BPP-420L.

- 4x40 connector eliminated, pcb smaller with markings rightside up for 4x20.
- Config switch eliminated, replaced by solder-pad jumpers. Default configuration is 9600bps, Normal Mode.
- Backlight pads relocated; jumpers now install left-right (marked by dash on pcb).
- Location of input (+5V, GND, SERial) header is unchanged.
- Bell (buzzer) hookup pads moved slightly.
